How recently and how frequently your business is getting new reviews. Often more important than total review count for local search rankings.

Review velocity is a measure of how recent and how frequent your business reviews are. It is one of the most important — and most underrated — factors in Google’s local search ranking algorithm.

A business with 50 reviews from the last six months often outranks a business with 200 reviews from five years ago. The signal Google reads from velocity is: this business is currently active, currently serving customers, and currently delivering experiences worth reviewing.

Why It Matters

Local search rankings (the “map pack” or “local 3-pack” — the three businesses that show up at the top of “[service] near me” queries) are determined by three big factors:

  1. Relevance — does your business match the search term?
  2. Distance — how close are you to the searcher?
  3. Prominence — how well-known and active is your business?

Review velocity is one of the strongest prominence signals. Google updates the local pack multiple times per day, and review velocity is one of the inputs it weighs.

How to Build Review Velocity

The mechanics are simple but require discipline:

  1. Ask every paying customer for a review. Not the unhappy ones. Not the maybes. Every single satisfied customer.
  2. Ask immediately after the service is paid for. Same day, ideally within hours, while the experience is fresh.
  3. Send the request via SMS, not email. SMS converts at 5–10x the rate of email.
  4. Use a direct Google review link. One tap, no friction.
  5. Automate it. Manual asking is unreliable. The single biggest mistake service businesses make is leaving review asks to memory.

A small service business that asks every customer post-payment via automated SMS will typically generate 3–5x more reviews than one that asks manually.
