Close Rate

The percentage of leads (or quotes) that convert to paying customers. The single most important sales metric for a service business.

Also known as: Conversion Rate, Win Rate

Close rate is the percentage of leads — or quotes — that convert to paying customers. For service businesses, two close rates matter:

These are different numbers and they tell you different things.

Why It Matters

Close rate is one of the few metrics that directly multiplies revenue. Going from a 20% close rate to a 30% close rate at the same lead volume is a 50% revenue increase with zero additional marketing spend.

It’s also one of the easiest metrics to improve, because most service businesses have several common close-rate killers they can fix in weeks, not months.

Service Business Benchmarks

Typical close rates by industry in 2026:

IndustryLead-to-customerQuote-to-job
Plumbing (emergency)30–50%60–80%
HVAC service25–40%50–70%
HVAC install15–30%30–50%
Cleaning (residential)20–35%70–90%
Roofing10–20%30–50%
Pest control25–40%60–80%
Handyman30–50%70–90%

Higher-ticket services (roofing installs, HVAC replacements) have lower close rates because customers shop around more. Lower-ticket emergency services have high close rates because customers want it fixed today.

What Drives Close Rate

The top five drivers, in rough order of impact:

  1. Speed to lead. Responding within 5 minutes vs. 30 minutes is a 21x conversion difference.
  2. Pricing options. Three-tier “good/better/best” quotes consistently close at 20–40% higher rates than single-price quotes — and increase average ticket size.
  3. Trust signals. Recent Google reviews, license/insurance documentation, and photos of completed work.
  4. Friction in booking. Online booking, deposit collection at booking, and one-tap accept-and-pay all reduce drop-off.
  5. Follow-up sequence. A second touch within 48 hours of an unaccepted quote recovers 10–25% of the otherwise-lost jobs.

Most service business owners are surprised to find their lead-to-customer close rate is in the single digits (because they’re losing leads before quoting). Almost always, the biggest gains come from improving speed to lead, not from getting better at quoting.
